The 12th International Symposium on "Deep Seismic Profiling of the Continents and Their Margins" will be held at Shonan Village Center, Hayama, near Tokyo, Japan. The symposium, partly sponsored by JSPS and IGCP 474, will take place from Sunday September 24, 2006 to Friday September 29, 2006. The 12th meeting is in a sequence of successful conferences held at Cornell/84, Cambridge/86, Canberra/88, Bayreuth/90, Banff/92, Budapest/94, Asilomar/96, Platja d'Aro/98, Ulvik/2000, Taupo/2003 and Mont-Tremblant/2004, and will be the first time to be held in Asia. We encourage you to participate in this symposium.
Scientific Program
We invite submission of research papers concerning deep seismic techniques for imaging and constraining the structure, composition and tectonics of the continental lithosphere. The focus of the scientific program will be studies of the Earth's crust and lithosphere using seismic reflection, refraction and teleseismic methods, and integration of these studies with other geophysical techniques and geological data. Because of the strong interest by Japanese earth scientists in disastrous earthquakes which occur in and around the Japanese islands, we add two sessions on "Subduction structures of megathrust zones" and "Seismic investigations for disastrous earthquake areas". Session topics will include:
o Active continental margins
o Intra-continental collision and accretion
o Continental rifts and basins
o Passive continental margins
o Integrated multidisciplinary case studies
o The continental mantle
o Numerical modeling of heterogeneity and anisotropy
o Innovative seismic acquisition and processing techniques.
o Crustal seismic investigations and mineral resources.
o Subduction structures of magathrust zones
o Seismic investigations for disastrous earthquake areas
Both oral and poster contributions are encouraged. Following the tradition of these meetings and to stimulate a workshop-like environment, there will be no parallel sessions. Posters are considered a fundamental part of the meeting, and ample time will be dedicated to discussion of poster contributions. Authors of oral presentations are encouraged to also present their major results as posters. Open discussion sessions during the evenings are anticipated. A symposium volume is planned through an international journal after the conference.
Venue
Shonan Village Center is located near the center of Miura Peninsula with its scenic views of Mt. Fuji and an overlook onto Sagami Bay. See http://www.shonan-village.co.jp for more details about the venue. It is 50 km from Tokyo and 2.5-hour from Tokyo (Narita) International Airport by direct train. In late September, expect a nice early autumn season and temperatures in the high 20o C during the day and about 20o C at night.
On one afternoon we plan a bus trip to Kamakura City. For 150 years beginning in 1192, Kamakura served as the political center of Japan. This trip takes you to the most spectacular spots within Kamakura City, such as the Great Buddha in Kotokuin Temple, Hase Kannon Temple, etc.
Accommodation and Registration
We expect most participants to stay at the conference center. Several types of rooms are available. The final accommodation fee will be determined depend on sponsorship and announced in second circular. The current conference rate is as follows;

Full registration fee for the symposium, payable in advance, is estimated to be around 60,000 JPY (546 USD, 444 EUR). This includes the abstract volume, coffee/tea during breaks, buffet lunches, and participation in social events (e.g. icebreaker). The Symposium banquet will be extra. These fees cover all meals (Sunday evening through Friday lunch), proceedings volumes, and participation in social events (e.g. icebreaker and a half-day trip).
Post-conference field excursion(September 30 - October 2, 2006)
A field excursion to visit the Izu collision zone (arc-arc collision zone between the Izu-Bonin and Honshu arcs) is planned. Potential sites to visit include the Kozu-Matsuda active fault, Tanna fault displaced in 1930, Hakone volcano, Miocene subaqueous volcaniclastics in Izu Peninsula and the locations of deep seismic profiles collected by the recent earthquake-hazards related Metropolitan Project. Cost of the excursion is 65,000 JPY (585 USD, 481 EUR)* and includes transportation, hotel accommodation, field guide, and most meals. Maximum number of participants is 40 persons.
Important Dates and Deadlines:
February 1, 2006: The second Circular will be uploaded on the web and will contain details on procedures for registration and accommodation, instructions for preparing abstracts, how to travel to the meeting, information about publication of the proceedings volume, etc.
May 1, 2006: The deadline of early bird registration.
June 1, 2006: Deadline for Abstract Submission.
